INTRODUCTION

RED FLAGS, a one woman show based on a true story, is about living with and surviving domestic violence.  The play runs 55 minutes and it is written and performed by Susan Gordon–Clark.

RED FLAGS was conceived during a workshop for solo performance writing, taught by Gretchen Cryer.

Susan Gordon-Clark’s journey, like that of many victims, was a search for the dream of perfect love.  The eventual reality of her relationship would prove to be a horror of physical and psychological abuse.

Susan illustrates this experience on stage with the use of many different characters in her life at the time, and helps us understand why and how she got drawn in, bought the lies, fell in love; and eventually believed, when things went wrong, that everything was her fault. Susan doubted herself, her self-esteem eroded, she gave up control of her life, alienated friends and her dream became a nightmare.

Once a person recognizes that they are in an abusive situation, it's the first step to breaking free. However, breaking free is only the first step. The steps that follow can be very difficult and because of that difficulty many victims give up and return to their abusers again and again, continuing the cycle of violence and all too often losing their lives.  In RED FLAGS Susan, uses her real life experiences to teach everyone about the warning signs that can make the difference between years of abuse or even death and a lifetime of freedom.

In her performance of RED FLAGS, Susan manages to educate and bring about the hope necessary to inspire others and raise awareness of a situation that affects one in four women in our country.

Sypnosis

Often the victim in an abusive relationship is asked, “What is wrong with you? Why do you stay?  Why do you let yourself be treated that way? Why don’t you just leave?”
Looking from the outside, friends and family can visualize a solution. They know something is wrong, but the victim doesn’t listen to them, doesn’t take their advice.
Written and performed by Susan Gordon-Clark, RED FLAGS is the true story of one woman’s journey from a dream of perfect love to the horror of physical and psychological abuse.  The story, told by many different voices, helps us understand why and how Susan fell in love; how she got drawn in, bought the lies and eventually believed everything was her fault. She doubts herself, erodes self-esteem, gives up control of her life, alienates friends and loses her dream.
Anyone who has ever been in a relationship needs to hear this story. The message is important because recognizing that you are in an abusive situation is the first step to breaking free. However, breaking free is only the first step.  The steps that follow can be very difficult and because of that difficulty many victims give up and return to their abusers again and again, continuing the cycle of violence.
RED FLAGS shows you the warning signs that can make the difference between years of abuse and a lifetime of freedom
